I watched as they put Ricky in the squad car. His hands were cuffed, his head hung low. No matter how much I called his name, he wouldn’t look at me. Ricky wasn’t a criminal, just a good kid who’d made mistakes.

The officer told me Ricky would be booked downtown, and hours passed in silence. Then, late that evening, the officer returned. He looked at me, regret in his eyes. “I arrested the wrong kid,” he said, and then added, “I think I know who set him up.”

A week later, Officer Daniels, now off-duty, visited. He apologized for arresting Ricky, but I told him, “What matters is what we do after.” We both learned something, and life, as hard as it was, had taught us important lessons.

Ricky’s record was clean, and he was going to be okay.
